Boulevard Bridge (SR 161) Closure for River City Half Marathon and Pedestrian Hours

Richmond, Va. — The Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority announces a one-day closure of Boulevard Bridge (SR 161).

The closure will occur on: Saturday March 8 from 7:00 AM until 1:00 PMfor the River City Half Marathon. 

Following the race, the bridge will remain closed 11:00am to 1:00 pm to allow pedestrian access along the bridge as part of the 100-Year Celebration for the Boulevard Bridge. 

Motorists are reminded to pay attention to signage in the area, and to use caution while traveling near the closure.

About 100-Year Celebration for Boulevard Bridge

 The Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA) is proud to announce a yearlong celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the Boulevard Bridge, affectionately known as the “Nickel Bridge.” Since 1925, this iconic structure has connected Richmond communities, and RMTA is excited to commemorate its rich history with a series of special events throughout 2025.

 

The first event in this milestone celebration is the River City Half Marathon on Saturday, March 8, 2025. The racecourse takes runners across the Boulevard Bridge, offering a unique opportunity for participants and spectators alike to experience the bridge in a new way.

 

Join the Celebration on March 8, 2025!

 

Cheer on the Runners – Spectators are encouraged to gather along the Boulevard Bridge from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM to support the athletes as they race across this historic landmark.

 

Walk the Bridge – After the race, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the bridge will be open for pedestrians only! Visitors can stroll across, snap photos, and take in the breathtaking views of the James River—an experience unlike any other.
