All-Electronic Tolling Is Here: What Drivers Need to Know to Navigate RMTA Roads

Richmond, VA – RMTA has successfully transitioned to all-electronic tolling (AET), modernizing travel in the region. With AET, drivers are experiencing enhanced safety, improved traffic flow and reduced congestion on the Powhite Parkway, Downtown Expressway, Boulevard Bridge and all ramps.

“This is a transformative moment for RMTA and the Richmond Region,” said Dean Lynch, chair of the RMTA Board of Directors. “ The transition to all-electronic tolling represents years of planning, investment and coordination to deliver a safer and more efficient expressway system for drivers who rely on it every day.”

To ensure safety on the roads, RMTA asks motorists to follow these important guidelines:

  • Keep moving and maintain posted speeds. There is no need to slow down unless traffic conditions require it. Overhead structures capture E-ZPass transponders or license plate images and tolls are collected electronically – no cash, no stopping. (Exception: Drivers may pay cash at the Downtown Expressway from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Outside of those hours, E-ZPass or Pay-By-Plate apply.)
  • Obey posted roadway and overhead signage: Some signs have changed with the transition to all-electronic tolling.
  • Remain patient. Some drivers may need time to adjust to the new system.
  • Stay alert. Attentive driving helps reduce incidents and keeps traffic flowing safely.
  • Change lanes carefully. Remember all lanes are open, and there is no need to stop to pay a toll. Avoid sudden lane changes.

To avoid billing issues, motorists should keep their vehicle registration information up to date with E-ZPass and the DMV. E-ZPass customers should also maintain sufficient account balances and ensure that transponders are properly mounted on their windshields for accurate toll reads.

RMTA is an independent authority and political subdivision that was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1966. RMTA owns and operates three roadways in the Greater Richmond Region – the Powhite Parkway, Downtown Expressway and Boulevard Bridge.
