For Immediate Release

Only One Day Until All-Electronic Tolling Goes Live on RMTA Roads

No cash, no stopping required on Powhite Parkway, Downtown Expressway, Boulevard Bridge and all ramps

Richmond, VA – The countdown is on. With just one day remaining, the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA) is preparing to officially launch all-electronic tolling (AET) on its roadways. This transition modernizes the expressway system, improves safety, reduces emissions, minimizes traffic congestion and fosters a better travel experience for motorists across the region.

Effective Saturday, February 28, drivers will no longer be able to pay with cash, including coins, on the Powhite Parkway, Boulevard Bridge and all ramps – tolls will only be collected via E-ZPass or Pay-By-Plate.

AET will also begin on the Downtown Expressway; however, cash will also be accepted 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Outside of those hours, tolls will be collected via E-ZPass and if a driver does not have an E-ZPass, Pay-By-Plate will apply.

In preparation for go live, RMTA has:

  • Performed system testing and validation
  • Installed and inspected tolling equipment
  • Conducted staff training and operational readiness exercises
  • Launched customer awareness and outreach initiatives

Drivers are encouraged to ensure their vehicle registration information is up to date with E-ZPass and DMV and that their transponders are mounted correctly if using E-ZPass. E-ZPass offers a lower cost trip. For example, the E-ZPass rate for two-axles is $.90 on the Powhite Parkway and Downtown Expressway. For drivers who do not have an E-ZPass, the Pay-By-Plate rate is $2.

RMTA appreciates the public’s cooperation and patience during this transition and looks forward to delivering a more efficient expressway system for drivers. For more information, visit www.rmtaonline.org
